As usual the Dover Bros have decided to do it the hard way, by doing it in a 40 yr. old MG. To top it off we added to the challenge by naming the car the "Prince of Darkness". That ought to rub some sore spots on the ole Prince. The race is April 16 & 17 at gingerman.

We bought the car from Pete Mantell who owns Mantell Motor Sports and he specializes in building MG's into V-8 powered machines. Pete took me for a ride in his MGB which is powered by a 400hp plus V8 quite a machine to say the least. He has a very nice shop and all his work is done first class. I was very impressed by all he has done.

We took the MG home ans brought it to the Dover Bros. garage and because it hadn't been run in a few years we drained the gas out and made sure it would turn over by hand then turned the engine over until we saw oil pressure then we tried to fire it. The engine fired after a few attempts and ran quite well. We then replaced the clutch slave cylinder bled it then we were able to move the car under her own power. Still lots of work to do brakes and next on the list also we know there are fuel pump issues to take are of .

We're Getting Back to Racin.

This is going to be the new race car for Dover Bros Racin. We are going to enter the 24Hours of Lemons we just need to work out a few details as far as purchasing it and we will have a sponsor for the race car. it is a 1970 MGBGT some parts of the car will be removed to get the price down to $495.00 like the wheels and a few other parts like the interior and it has an MGC hood which will be removed. Tom and I have some old parts from when we owened MGB's also here in Michigan there is a large number of people we know who own MGB's who we can get parts from. here is the link for the 24 Hours of Lemons http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/ it looked like fun to us and so far we have four drivers . I will try to keep the updates coming as we progress also I have to do a better job keeping the SPAMERS off this blog all SPAMERS will be removed. First outside of Puebla Mexico we were rear ended by another race team while we were pulling up to a toll booth. The race car was on the trailer and the rear end took all the damage. we thought for sure we were out of the race before it began. The next day in Cotzy short for a name I never in pronounce in my lifetime we checked the car over and drove it the rest of the way to Tuxtula. Once there many teams offered to help get the car fixed by any means necessary. We decided to leave the car alone and see if we could get it past tech inspection, the car passed and we were ready to race. We went for the qualifying and felt the car was good to race and it drove really good all we had to do was to go to the start line the next day and race for the next seven days. Little did we know the next day we were in for the ride of our lives. That will be the next post.

The Unsung Heros of the La Carrera

Nobody can start or finish the la Carrera without the support crew who live in the shadows of the race. This year we were blessed to have on our crew Kevin Sullivan and Jim Blett . Kevin and his wife Jackie spend their winters in San Miguel while living in New Jersey during the summer. We met Jackie and Kevin on our first trip to San Miguel two years ago and instantly became friends; it must be a Sullivan thing. Jim built the engine for the Volvo which preformed excellent all the time. When arriving at a service stop seeing the crew there is always a welcome sight. Many thanks to Jackie Sullivan and Jann Blett for allowing their husbands to join us on this adventure The crews pretty much travel the same roads as we do with the exception of some speed sections. The crew is the main reason most cars are on the road the next day preforming repairs on the cars at night with little to no sleep..Tom and I just want to thank Kevin and Jim for keeping us in the race and being there for us. Kevin speaks spanish which really helped us out and Jim's knowledge of Volvos really proved to be what kept us going. So when you see a Carrera car cross the finish line on the final day it is the crew who got them there.

We are in Tuxtula

Racing legend Herschel Mcgriff and me in San Miguel de Allende. He also signed the dash board of the Volvo for us. We are currently in Coatcoalcos Mexico which is on the Gulf of Mexico we arrived tonight after a 13 hour drive to get here a very stressful ride to say the least. Tomorrow we arrive in Tuxtula Guteirrez to start to go through the whole process of tech inspection and all. Just a note anyone can post to this blog site and as time permits I will try to update spare time will not be a luxary from now on . Racin' sizes available are small to 3XL the cost is 25.00 each including shipping. We are using this as a fundraiser for our Mexican adventure in October. To find out how to get the shirts e-mail doverbrothersracin@hotmail.com and we will e-mail you the address to sent the money to . We feel this a more secure way to do this.
The car is coming along good we found a small pin hole leak in the radiator so that was repaired and reinstalled in the car . With all the cooling problems we had in the past this really didn't surprise us and this is another reason to have plenty of time to do testing on your car before you make the trip to Mexico. We are bringing a spare radiator along just to be on the safe side. Our last trip we didn't bring a spare alternator and it froze up and we were out for a half a day. I would say if a part has a chance of breaking bring a spare because the one item you leave home is the one that is going to fail. We had a spare transmission with us and another Volvo needed one so we worked out a deal and they were running the next day. One thing all the racers do is to help each other out with much needed advice or parts or car knowledge. Never shrug off advice from a veteran racer they are always willing to give some really good tips to help you out. And then you can listen to some really good stories from past races while having a cold beer with them.

Mechanicial Surgeons

Well we have the Volvo back running again we finished assembling the engine last night. It fired up right away and tonight we are going to reset the valves and re torque the head. Jim Blett really knows his way around the Volvo engine his value in Mexico in going to prove to be
quite a bonus for us to us. From now on Jim will be making all the mechanical decisions on the car. We still need to do some minor work on the car now the major thing for us is to wait to leave for Mexico.

This weekend we are taking the car to a Volvo meet at the Gilmore Car Museum and put some miles on it. I hope to post some more pictures from the weekend next week.

Your Help Appreciated

We have decided to offer space on the car for sponsorships .What you get is a 4"x8" space on the roof of the car for 150.00. To contact us e-mail at sullivan.g.j@comcast.net

Now for the Volvo update. The engine was disassembled and Jim looked everything over and the lifters are going to be replaced and while the engine is apart all new bearings will be installed and of course all new gaskets. The cam and pistons were all in perfect condition . We had some serious cooling problems the last day of the 2006 La Carrera so we felt this was necessary to check everything over. Now the front suspension has been rebuilt the rear end has been changed, the exhaust and finally the engine. We should have the car ready to go with two months to do some testing and any changes we feel necessary.

Update July 2008

The gearing was changed in the rear end we now have 3.54 gearing which replaced the 4.11 gears. We should be getting more top end and not putting as much stress on the engine . We took the car out for a test run and noticed a difference right away. Kevin has a car passion and has followed the La Carrera for years.
Right now the engine is out of the Volvo Jim wants to check the whole thing over and make sure all is well inside. The car was running good but in the 2006 la Carrerra we had cooling problems so just to be sure he is going to go through the bearings check the cam and pistons. The car will be back together by the end of the month then we will have time to work out any problems if run into them.

We Are Smokin !!

This past weekend Tom , Bill and I rebuilt my smoker which was in dire need of a rebuild. The fire box was completely shot and some of the cooking area needed some attention also. I use my cooker all year and the winters have been rough on it. So we took a Saturday off from the Volvo and rebuilt the cooker

.This is how the old fire box looked when we cut it off.

The new fire box is made out of stainless steel which I fabricated . I wanted to make the fire box larger so I can use longer pieces of wood . The plan I had worked perfect it all went together like I knew what I was doing. Tom and Bill were a very big help during the rebuild the only thing I would do different next time is pay them in cash not beer. Here is the first firing of the smoker

I tried some pork lion and short ribs which came out really good. The thing seems to hold heat much better than before so less wood to use. The last major thing to do is to build up the new rear end with 3.54 gearing which should get us more top end. We currently have 4.11 gearing . The last day of the La Carrera is quite long with a lot of transit driving and this should take less stress on the engine. We will be making some minor changes to the roll cage adding a second door bar which will be removeable because two old guys just can't get in and out of a race car like young kids. We are still waiting for word on the fire system for in the car we always carr two extenguishers in the car and one in the trunk. Some time in August we will be pulling the engine just to be safe.

This weekend we will be doing a total rebuild to my smoker. The fire box finally gave out after 12 years so I fabricated a new one out of stainless steel. When this is finished we will do a test firing and then probably some ribs and brisket or pork loin. Whenever the somker is fired up people seem to show up like seagulls at the dump. Tom always seems to leave with bbq sauce all over him he knows never wear a new white shirt because it will be the last time it will look good. This is probably next to racing my favorite hobby.

I want to thank Gary Faules for reminding me that I need to update more often. I did it

Thanks Gary.

On another subject my son Tim got his Submarine Dolphins while serving on board the USS LaJolla SSN 701. He is a Machinest Mate and currently on patrol in the Pacific .

Tim is on the far right

One Job At A Time

We are working on our list of improvements one job at a time. Right now we are fabricating the mountings for the oil cooler . While doing this we wanted to plan how to quickly disconnect lines if by chance we lost and oil line or if the oil cooler failed. One of our plans is to carry in the car a by-pass line for an emergency. it is quite well known in the La Carrera to always expect the unexpected. Tom and I are able to do all of our own metal fabrication and I must say having to work with engineers every day at my job Tom is a top notch engineer. So far we have been able to figure out how to fabricate everything we have needed for the race car. Give us a good vise c-clamps some wood and angle iron and we can make it .
Here I am making the lower mount for the oil cooler. Below is the finished mount
We also made hinges for the hood this was done because a certain unnamed person (Tom) ran over the hood when we removed it to check things over outside of Puebla. At first when we got to Puebla Tom told everyone we hit a buzzard some people believed him. We still have a lot of laughs over this. I personally think Tom hates the hood because he put another ding in it so hinges were needed before he hit me in the head with the hood. We have always had fun working on the car and our friendship has gotten really close while doing this.

We Are In The Race!!

We are now officially entered in the 2008 La Carrera Panamericana we knew that this year all of the North American slots would be filled quickly so we sent our entry fee in right away. North America is going to be allotted 50 slots this year and at least 63 teams have expressed interest in running the La Carrera. There is a lot of improvements to be made to the car this year so now it is going to be full speed ahead on all of the work ahead of us. Gary Faules e-mailed me yesterday with some really good advice about spares and how to work with an auto parts supplier about getting spares on loan and returning what you don't use and paying for what you do use. Gary's blog is very well written with a lot of very useful information about racing and the La Carrera.
His site is http://lacarrera2007.blogspot.com/ We are going to Port City Racing today to get our new oil cooler and check out a few other things while we are there. It took a while to finish things up before we were able to fire it a few friends were on hand to see this old race car start. The car idled fine and all of a sudden quit . Tom and I spent some time trying to restart it on the following Saturday a quick call to Jim Blett and he said to check for stuck valves what we found were 2 broken rocker arms. We then checked to see if all the valves were opening and all was fine so we replaced the rocker arms and it idled just fine I went to drive the car and heard a POP!! and it quit again. We pulled the valve cover off and another broken rocker arm. Tom called John Twist a well known MG expert who runs a shop nearby and who rebuilt the engine 13 years ago he said to bring in the head and he would check it over and while we had the head off to check the rise on the cam. A stock MG has .250 rise so we pulled the head and bingo there was the problem the valves were hitting the top of the block. We then checked the rise on the cam with a dial indicator and it was .325 so this all finally made sense.John Twist checked the head and all was fine no damage so what we did wad to cut clearance in the top of the engine block for the valves to open fully. The head was reassembled and started fine so we took the car for a ride nothing like driving an open roadster when it is below 30 degrees out and snowing. We both drove the car it was fun to finally drive this car after it had sat for over 30 years.

Later that day we loaded the car on the trailer and delivered it to the Beadle house. the car was driven off the trailer and into the garage for the rest of the winter. John Beadle aka "Big Dog" would have been proud to see the car running. There is some details to finish on the car we decided to wait till the weather improves before tackling those issues.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v11.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D08c29e9a3939e61c%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330360612%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D60AB934733A72AAD1B1D5AD551D43D22EA0CCB3A.599605F467E34805F1A47486B8B92461E739F0D1%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D8c29e9a3939e61c%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DvtPKBdwNRiU1PDVX2-WiTdbsHPQ&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

You Must Stop Before You Can Go

We now have the brakes pretty much done on the MGA just have to pick up 2 copper washers for the banjo fitting on the right front caliper. We pulled the drums and calipers off and luckily were able to rebuild everything. We had a set of wire wheels and tires donated by Gary Wortman from our MG car club. Thanks Gary!! The engine is the next thing to work on we spun it over carefully putting oil in the cylinders first and letting it set and then turning the flywheel by hand and finally using the starter to spin the engine over. I have and exhaust system from my MGA that we are going to use for the car a few years ago I put a 1800 engine in my MGA and a different exhaust system. My wife always used to ask me why I kept the old exhaust system now I know why. If all goes well we hope to fire the car up in a couple weeks .

Tribute To A True Friend

Our very good friend John"Big Dog"Beadle passed away in the spring of 2006. The engine was rebuilt by John Twist from University Motors about 10 years ago. Our goal is to get the car running for John's daughter Terry. She wants to keep the car original just get the mechanical working and safe to drive on the road .

John was a very special friend he was a graduate of the University of Michigan and retired from Amway as Data Processing Manager. John was a BBQ expert who taught me all about BBQ he never shared any of his recipes but he was always willing to help you with anything you wanted to make. He always wanted to get the MGA running again after he retired but his health ended up not working out he lost both of his legs to diabetes he said he would never use a wheel chair and true to his word he didn't. John is a friend that will always be missed and always remembered.

Test Drive

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsH4occDURc

We took the Volvo out for a test drive this past week above is the link to the video of the test drive. Tom said he had a great time meeting Gary and talking about the La Carrera.
They both got to share some ideas on the race and what to expect when you get there. Gary is building a Mustang to run in the La Carrera and he updates almost daily with a lot of good stories and information to share. If you want to see a car being built from the ground up he has done a very good job of sharing the build. It made for a lot of fun for us. Transit sections are really fast we were passed one time by a Studebaker I know we were doing close to 100 mph and he just blew by us. One thing though in small towns always go the speed limit the local Police can really make a nice profit off you as some drivers found out. The Federalies were always helpful to everyone when they escorted you into a city speed laws were shattered. Can you imagine being in a high speed chase with the police with them leading.

The Hula Girl was also given by Tom's daughter Julie. She rode all the transit sections and finally we made her ride the speed sections . The Mexican people got a lot of laughs out of her . She is still in the car today she lost an arm we found it and thanks to super glue she is just fine. We glued magnets to her and she rode on the part of the roll cage over the dash sometimes after a speed run she would be upside down if she was was we knew we had a fast drive.

Finally our Lucky "Tits" . A friend gave us these molded tits as a gift for the car so we did some additions and colored them with pink chalk for an authentic look and a little brown paint at the top to touch them off. they were always somewhere on the car while we were building it.

We always rubbed them for good luck before the green flag went down. Fernando on the left was driving when they went off the road on Mil Cumbres I have included the video link right after they went off . Brad was always upbeat no matter what happened. While they were waiting to get towed back, Brad pulled 2 baseball gloves out of the trunk and him and Fernando played catch to kill time. The car was repaired the next day and as you can see in the next picture a pretty good job for less than a day. Brad had to be one of the most positive people I have ever met.
We all signed the hood I of course wished Wally and the Beaver my best. At the time Brad was talking about replacing the the hood and hanging the old one in his garage . I would have kept the old one on just for the war stories. It would be a Badge of Courage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut2-Yyybs7c

We lost our alternator just before Mil Cumbre so we decided not to run make the repairs and run the next day. We still think this was the best option as we found out later there were more than a few teams who missed speed sections to make the necessary repairs so they could race the next day. We did drive the Mil Cumbre section just after everyone had left and it was getting dark. On the way back we found a Porsche with a British team which lost an engine so our crew happened to arrive so we loaded them up in our trailer and pulled them back. Their crew finally showed up and we caravaned the wounded soldiers back toward the hotel. Tom might have gotten a little testy during this trip because the Brits got us lost and it was raining and dark and we were running on battery power only. Tom is normally a very calm logical person and this day was not a good one I remember the "F" might have been spoken more than once and F^&%^g Btitish C)@^$&":#$'s might have been mentioned once or twice also. When we got back I might have had a slight temper tantrum after being left in the mountains we did get our time card in and Gerie Bledsoe helped us find an alternator from Sam Berg to get us back running. When all seem hopeless someone is always there to help. Steve Walters helped us rebuild the alternator while his wife Janet went to the drivers meeting. We had a prayer meeting in the lot and our car was blessed by Stanley Gold ,he told us that our car was good for the rest of the race and he was right. This whole event is about the people they all seem to help each other in some way. I really believe in the term now "Paying Forward"

Taking One For The Team

Tom and I have been trying to figure out how to get some sort of sponsorship for 2008 and I have come up with a novel idea. I am going to sell Tom's services to ladies at retirement homes. My mother God Bless Her used to say the old ladies "Never Tell ,Never Swell and Appreciate It Like Hell" I really think Tom has a calling. Just how do I break the news to him. I am thinking of having him dress up in his racing suit and telling him they want us to visit then and suddenly leave him on his own. This is what is called taking one for the team.

My wife and I hope to visit our son in Pearl Harbor in October he is currently serving on the USS La Jolla SSN 701 a fast attack submarine . So this year we are not going to make it to the la Carrera. This will give us time to get some sponsorship and keep up with family obligations which are very important to us. Our wives supported us for two years while we built the car which we were absent from them most of the time. Without their support we never could have done it in the first place. Tom and I both have MGA's which were hardly driven the last two years so a couple trips with the wives are in order.

Finally Paint andThe Engine

By the end of August we had Steve Lundberg finish the body work and paint the carhe did an outstanding job. Finally we could put the engine in ,fuel cell, wire the car ,seats and 5 point harnesses and test drive the car. Piece of cake. WRONG!! We put in many late nights with the help of Jim Blett without Jim's help we couldn't have completed the car on time. Also during this time I lost my mother which was difficult also. Jim Austhof and Dan Turrell were also a huge help. It's good to have friends to come when help is really needed. We worked the last three months day and night plus working full time at the end we had the last two days off. All we had to do now was drive to Veracruz which was only 3000 miles away. If you ever rebuild a car no matter how good your memory is you tend to forget. We got and 1800cc engine from our friend Jim Blett the Volvo expert who happens to own Swedish Car Service . He happened to throw in a free Volvo 122 with the engine all we had to do was remove the engine. Jim did the rebuild on the engine and it was one hell of a terrific job. Tom and I wore surgeons outfits while we did this mainly for laughs and Tom's son in law Sean got them for us. We got the disc brake parts engine and tranny from the 122. Jim Blett helped us with the conversion from drum to disc brakes. One of our salesmen from where I work gave me a couple of Grammer air ride truck seats he had . We really appreciated these during the La Carrera they were locked down during the speed sections and while in transit we had the most comfortable car that was there. You tend to take quite a beating in the car all day and these seats proved to be real well worth having in the car. We had Pat Chapman recover the seats for us they looked really good . The fenders needed to be fixed and Yorge Da Velder did one hell of a job. We must have gone through 3 spools of wire welding the car. I think Tom got fleet price on the gas. The only way we could have done all the work to the car was to do the work ourselves and have Jim Blett to help steer us in the right direction.

The Roll Cage

We weren't quite sure how we going to do the roll cage so we went out and bought pipe insulation the foam type to get an idea as to what we wanted. we laid the whole thing out and then went on line to find a place that would bend the cage. Tom found a place they sent us the information they needed to do the bending and the next thing we knew the bent tubing arrived and we were on our way to building the roll cage. We had to cut holes in the roof to get acess to weld around the top of the cage by the roof. The back holes we turned into air vents. The front holes we welded up .This is when I found out Tom cannot weld! The part of the roof he welded looked like a soup bowl .We got a lot of laughs out of this. One thing about working on this project we made fun out of the mistakes we made and we never had an argument. The nice thing about working on the roll cage is it got me off the cold floor. I complained to Tom one day that the beer was warm from his fridge so the next time I came over he had all the beer on the floor and it was cold.

The Big Fix Is On

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5037487711481436530" style="DISPLAY: block; With Jim's advice we had the rear axles magnafluxed we had 2 sets they were all good. We took the front end apart and went through each piece to be sure all was still in a good safe working order. We tried to follow the old saying "you're only as strong as your weakest link" This really paid off because we did have a good solid strong car. When we were putting the rear end back together with new seals and bearings we found out Volvo had the bearings opposite of what we were used to so we had to come up with a way to pull the bearings back out. we looked around the garage and finally came up with a old gaer puller and got the thing out. That's when we started our loud laugh kind of a HA HA HA HA HA!!! When working one of us would start to do the HA HA and both of us would do it. we scared the hell out of Dave Ress doing this one time he thought Tom and I were coming to blows. We had to explain the whole story to him. Dave was taking OTJ training welding with us I taught him how to weld and he would help us with the Volvo. He was redoing the frame on his MGA . this worked out good for all of us. I still think Tom chills the floor in his garage. The metal fabracation was done by Tom and I. When we looked at the rockers we decided to cut them open when we did there was nothing left inside rust had taken its toll . we ended up getting 2x2 tubing and connecting it front to back on both sides and to the body tub it made for a stronger car. we made our own rockers and when we were done it looked pretty good. I got the name "Yorge Da Velder" doing the welding on the car.

The Disassembly of the Car

Right after Christmas Tom and I had the week off for vacation so we started the disassembly of the car. We thought it was going to be a breeze just take the car apart and a little cleaning and reassembly and we're off to the La Carrera. The more we took the car apart the more rust we found. The floors on the car were pretty much gone and we needed solid floors for the roll cage so we replaced one section at a time welding both the top and bottom of the panels and we added some support onto them also. I still think Tom chilled the garage floors every time before I would lay on my back welding the bottom of the car. We spent a lot of time just rebuilding the floors of the car. All of the rebuild was done after we got out of work and many weekends. The first year if we wanted a weekend off we did it later we found out that may not have been the best idea. Taking on a project like this is not an easy job especially if you are doing all the work.

Thankfully we had a Volvo expert living by us Jim Blett who gave us more help and information than you can imagine. Jim proved to be a very big part of this project and we got to be good friends with him while working on the car.

I will try to post more later Tom will also be posting on here .

How It All Began

Our long road to the La Carrera began about 1994 when I rented the La Carrera Panamericana by Pink Floyd. I bought the movie and showed it to Tom and we were hooked. I think the 2 Mexican blondes in the movie also got us interested. Whenever we got together for a couple beers during the winter the movie somehow was played. We always talked about how we should do the la Carrera and how we should do it some day. Tom had a couple 544 Volvos in college and they are a neat car and Volvo is also dependable so we decided if we were going to do this it would be in a Volvo. Our good friend Dale Andrews found a 1958 Volvo 444 on E Bay in Florida in 2004 so Tom bid on it and won. We left on a Thursday night with Tom's brother in law Burt to get the car in Inverness Fl. we got to Florida on Friday morning thanks to Burt driving all night rented a trailer at a U-Haul while waiting the employees were being questioned by the police for something unlawful or maybe just some bad judgement. We got the trailer and went to get the car which was just a short distance away. We loaded it up and started to head back to Michigan. We drove to Georgia and spent the night there and for dinner we went to Hooters. Burt told the young ladies in there he had just celebrated 50 years of marriage so they brought him upin front of the whole place and sang to him Burt stood up on a chair and was dancing with the girls 75 years old and acting like a kid. Tom and I thought us being race car guys we would get all the attention but Burt got it all. The next day we headed back to Michigan and by 1.30 am Sunday we were home. We stored the car till winter when Tom was moving into his new house with a garage that we could work on the car in.

Our Team Logo

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036397785197731106" style="DISPLAY: block;
