MGA Running

Here is the car outside running .

We are going to post our plans for Dover Brothers Racin soon. We have some exciting news to announce soon. Also we have built the Dover Brothers all weather deck pictures will be posted soon.

MGA Finally Started

We finally got a chance to try and start the MGA #46 after many years sitting idle. It took a while to finish things up before we were able to fire it a few friends were on hand to see this old race car start. The car idled fine and all of a sudden quit . Tom and I spent some time trying to restart it on the following Saturday a quick call to Jim Blett and he said to check for stuck valves what we found were 2 broken rocker arms. We then checked to see if all the valves were opening and all was fine so we replaced the rocker arms and it idled just fine I went to drive the car and heard a POP!! and it quit again. We pulled the valve cover off and another broken rocker arm. Tom called John Twist a well known MG expert who runs a shop nearby and who rebuilt the engine 13 years ago he said to bring in the head and he would check it over and while we had the head off to check the rise on the cam. A stock MG has .250 rise so we pulled the head and bingo there was the problem the valves were hitting the top of the block. We then checked the rise on the cam with a dial indicator and it was .325 so this all finally made sense.John Twist checked the head and all was fine no damage so what we did wad to cut clearance in the top of the engine block for the valves to open fully. The head was reassembled and started fine so we took the car for a ride nothing like driving an open roadster when it is below 30 degrees out and snowing. We both drove the car it was fun to finally drive this car after it had sat for over 30 years.

Later that day we loaded the car on the trailer and delivered it to the Beadle house. the car was driven off the trailer and into the garage for the rest of the winter. John Beadle aka "Big Dog" would have been proud to see the car running. There is some details to finish on the car we decided to wait till the weather improves before tackling those issues.

You Must Stop Before You Can Go

We now have the brakes pretty much done on the MGA just have to pick up 2 copper washers for the banjo fitting on the right front caliper. We pulled the drums and calipers off and luckily were able to rebuild everything. We had a set of wire wheels and tires donated by Gary Wortman from our MG car club. Thanks Gary!! The engine is the next thing to work on we spun it over carefully putting oil in the cylinders first and letting it set and then turning the flywheel by hand and finally using the starter to spin the engine over. I have and exhaust system from my MGA that we are going to use for the car a few years ago I put a 1800 engine in my MGA and a different exhaust system. My wife always used to ask me why I kept the old exhaust system now I know why. If all goes well we hope to fire the car up in a couple weeks .

Tribute To A True Friend

Our very good friend John"Big Dog"Beadle passed away in the spring of 2006. John and his wife Sue used to race a 1962 MGA back in the early 60's when you would drive your race car to the track and use it for transportation during the week. Today we went to John' s house and picked up the old race car to get it back on the road again after some 30 years. We now have the car at the Dover Brothers Racin garage. The engine was rebuilt by John Twist from University Motors about 10 years ago. Our goal is to get the car running for John's daughter Terry. She wants to keep the car original just get the mechanical working and safe to drive on the road .

John was a very special friend he was a graduate of the University of Michigan and retired from Amway as Data Processing Manager. John was a BBQ expert who taught me all about BBQ he never shared any of his recipes but he was always willing to help you with anything you wanted to make. He always wanted to get the MGA running again after he retired but his health ended up not working out he lost both of his legs to diabetes he said he would never use a wheel chair and true to his word he didn't. John is a friend that will always be missed and always remembered.

Test Drive

We took the Volvo out for a test drive this past week above is the link to the video of the test drive. The cooling problems have been now solved Jim Blett was a very big help for all of this we were almost ready to start using wing nuts and Velcro to hold the head on so it would be easier to get off and on.

Tom and I stopped by Hooters and got a half dozen Hooters girls to go at least the sign said Hooters to go, the manager said that is not what the sign meant she said chicken wings we said we just wanted breasts instead . I guess Hooters to go is just chicken wings.

Tom Meets Gary Faules

I always wonderded where Tom got his Lizard breathe from.Tom and Gary Faules

I talked to Tom this evening who is in San Francisco and he hooked up with Gary Faules this past weekend . Tom said he had a great time meeting Gary and talking about the La Carrera.
They both got to share some ideas on the race and what to expect when you get there. Gary is building a Mustang to run in the La Carrera and he updates almost daily with a lot of good stories and information to share. If you want to see a car being built from the ground up he has done a very good job of sharing the build. His site is http://lacarrera2007.blogspot.com/2007/07/since-engine-is-due-any-day-now-i.html
